My column today is on the persistent question, How should conservatives assess Trump? I talk of calling balls and strikes. (If you’re going to ump, I say, try not to let too many pitches go uncalled. In other words, don’t be overly selective in your umping.)
Speaking of baseball, I cite a question from a British quiz show, Mastermind, which I was watching the other night. Brace yourself: “In basketball, what term is used for a single hit that enables a batter to make a complete circuit of the bases?”
This reminds me of an incident that I would like to recall here. About ten years ago, I read something in a major British paper that was absolutely wrong. It was in a news article about American politics. It was about Sarah Palin, specifically. I can’t remember the details, but I remember my reaction.
I did not gloat or cluck. I thought, “You know, you write about Britain from time to time, and you also write about other countries and their politics. Be careful.” And I am. It’s hard enough to understand the politics of one’s own country.
And, judging from Mastermind, the sports?
