“Permanent and devastating”

One of the weakest lines of pre-emptive realpolitik is that a defeat in November will be good for the GOP, because Obama will so screw things up that a horrified nation will turn back to a renewed, invigorated Republican Party in 2012. For a start, it’s always unwise to put your eggs in the basket of your opponent’s ineptitude. As long out-of-office conservatives in Britain, Canada and elsewhere learned, the other guys are, alas, never quite inept enough fast enough.

But there are other reasons not to take refuge in the consolations of opposition, outlined in this sobering piece by Michael Medved:
