“Permanent and devastating”

One of the weakest lines of pre-emptive realpolitik is that a defeat in November will be good for the GOP, because Obama will so screw things up that a horrified nation will turn back to a renewed, invigorated Republican Party in 2012. For a start, it’s always unwise to put your eggs in the basket of your opponent’s ineptitude. As long out-of-office conservatives in Britain, Canada and elsewhere learned, the other guys are, alas, never quite inept enough fast enough.
