Personal and Political, or, Taking a Cruz

What’s it like to have a friend run for president? Strange. Very strange. And exciting and tense. Today on the homepage, I begin a series on Ted Cruz. There will be three parts.

Frankly, it’s odd to have a friend in the U.S. Senate. There are only a hundred of them.

Cruz and I met on the 2000 George W. Bush campaign. “You may have heard that he is not well liked by the people around him.” That’s a line from my series (Part I).

Well, I liked him. More consequentially, Heidi liked him. And so did others.

Also in this opening installment, I compare Ted to Jim Harbaugh, the football star, and now star coach. Has that ever happened in journalism?

Journalists are always looking for a fresh perspective, for something that others are not quite able to offer. This series of mine is both personal and political. Whatever you think of Cruz, I think you may find something interesting in it.

If not — ask for your money back!
