On Morning Joe today, Representative Peter King said he thinks al-Qaeda’s current head, Ayman al-Zawahiri, is a more active leader than Osama bin Laden, his predecessor. ”In many ways, he’s more active than bin Laden was as far as monitoring a situation,” the New York Republican explained. “He’s more the chairman of the board right now.”

King, the chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, also warned that the recent threat that prompted the U.S. to close embassies across the Middle East and Africa is not just limited to the region. “It can be anywhere in the world,” he said, including domestically.

While some details remain unknown, he said the information the intelligence community gathered was specific enough and from credible-enough sources that they believe a plan is imminent. He echoed some of his congressional colleagues in saying that the threat is among the most serious he’s seen in his years in office.
