The Corner

Peter Schramm, R.I.P.

The Hungarian-born, America-loving friend of National Review has died. Here’s a piece he wrote for NRO on Washington and Lincoln, two of his heroes.

When my first book came out, in 1998, he was one of the first people to invite me to speak about it. He assembled a big audience (for me) at Ashland University in Ohio. He barely knew me at the time–he was just a generous guy who wanted to help a fellow conservative. I admired him for his learning, sought his wisdom on many subjects, and came to regard him as a friend.

John J. Miller, the national correspondent for National Review and host of its Great Books podcast, is the director of the Dow Journalism Program at Hillsdale College. He is the author of A Gift of Freedom: How the John M. Olin Foundation Changed America.
