The Phenomenon

Today on Uncommon Knowledge, Hoover fellow Shelby Steele and the Weekly Standard’s Bill Kristol consider the importance of Barack Obama and how Republicans might have better handled the immigration issue.

“I do think that Republicans were stupid on immigration [….] Romney, himself, and I do blame him for this, in the primaries, really demagogued the immigration issue against Perry and against Gingrich, who had perfectly reasonable proposals. I mean, you can differ with the details or not on in-state tuition or what you’re going to do with people who have been here illegally for 20 years. But Mitt Romney had a pretty hard edge to his attacks on Perry and Gingrich, and different from what he had done, I believe, as Governor of Massachusetts and different, I think, from what he really believes. So, I think he’s paying a little price for that.”
