William Saletan suggests that pro-choicers are politically wise to speak about abortion in “pragmatic” terms. Obama is supposedly looking for practical ways to reduce the abortion rate and to generate consensus. If the political debate in our country over abortion turned on who could do the better job of reducing the abortion rate while keeping the peace, I agree that it would be tremendous progress. But it is hard to see how those goals are served by expanding taxpayer funding of abortion, opposing parental consent, and supporting the legality of late-term abortion.
