Does anybody want to launch the Anti Big Phone Movement alongside me?
I currently have an iPhone 13 Mini, but it is starting to malfunction a bit. (I can’t quite explain the problem: The phone just seems to do everything slower than before, and the screen is sometimes unresponsive to my touch.)
Not too long ago, I figured I should go to some tech store and determine which newer iPhone model I like the most, then actually make the switch if a good “upgrade” offer comes along from my cell-service carrier. When I was fiddling with the new models, the employee told me that Apple has stopped making phones with the “mini” dimensions.
Here’s the problem: I have weirdly tiny hands. (You know how kids have the somewhat endearing practice of comparing hand sizes by pressing their palms together? My hand probably fits in just the palm of most adult men.) As a result of this apparent genetic defect, I genuinely cannot physically hold any of the newer iPhone models in my right hand and use that thumb to touch all the parts of the screen. Using such a large device daily would require me to regularly visit some sort of finger chiropractor.
I am not exaggerating when I say that the latest models look like tablets when held by a small gal like me. If the staff member had told me I was holding an iPad, I would have believed him. When I put the phone up to my ear, it was as though I had obscured my face with a clipboard.
Upon realizing that I might eventually have to sacrifice the comfort of using just one hand to do anything with my phone, I wanted to scream at a volume that would break the decibel scale: “WHY WOULD TIM COOK DO THIS TO ME? JUST MAKE SMALL PHONES AGAIN. THE MINI SIZE WAS PERFECT!” Since I’m probably the only person on the planet with this particular problem, I felt as though I had been personally targeted by the computer geeks working at Apple.
Yesterday, I saw the announcements about the new foldable iPhone Duo. (Seems like a missed opportunity to dub it the “iFold.”) This model seems like it might be a good fit for me when it is folded up, but it just seems ginormous when it is unfolded. Ugh!
Does anybody want to launch the Anti Big Phone Movement alongside me? It is a social-justice cause for folks with tiny hands, but we also need large-handed allies. (Somebody’s gotta hold the signs!) Surely I’m not the only person who is deeply frustrated with the current trend of making smartphones that have nearly the same dimensions as paperback novels.
