Podcasts Are Back!

Last week was going to be a great week for Between the Covers: a podcast released on Tuesday, as usual, and a special one on Wednesday for Halloween. Then the hurricane hit, forcing a delay. Now we’re catching up, and the podcasts are finally available for your listening pleasure.

The first is with Susan J. Wolfson, co-editor of The Annotated Frankenstein. We discuss why we’re still talking about Mary Shelley’s novel almost two centuries after it was written, the value of this edition’s annotations, and how much film has mattered to the ongoing life of Frankenstein.

The second is with Jeff VanderMeer, co-editor of The Weird: A Compendium of Strange and Dark Stories. We discuss the nature of a “weird tale,” what Ray Bradbury and Franz Kafka are doing in the book, and where readers who want to try a novel by Jeff VanderMeer–a distinguished fantasy/SF/noir writer–should start.

We’ll have an all-new podcast tomorrow. It has nothing to do with Halloween. Instead, it’s about pirates.

John J. Miller, the national correspondent for National Review and host of its Great Books podcast, is the director of the Dow Journalism Program at Hillsdale College. He is the author of A Gift of Freedom: How the John M. Olin Foundation Changed America.
