It appears that there are things we can do — military things — to counter Russia, and this is one of them. Poland has shown more judgment and courage than some who claim there is nothing we can do but allow Russia broad latitude to roll over its neighbors. The Polish people have lived through a long history of totalitarian terror and suppression and they apparently aren’t so willing to surrender their young democracy to Putin’s control.
