Poor Kate

Princess Kate revealed today the sad news that she has cancer, though she didn’t specify what kind or what stage. I know she is a public figure, and unwanted publicity is the price tag of royalty, but as much as the public might feel entitled to her private medical information — she is also a mother to young children dealing with a devastating cancer diagnosis. If her PR game has not been at its best recently, I think we can all cut her some slack. And especially given that her sit-down video explaining herself was so gracious and dignified.

Notably, she said that “having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance,” a put-down of the rumors, as advanced by Stephen Colbert, that Kate’s absence from public life was due to an alleged affair between her husband, Prince William, and Lady Rose Hanbury.

“It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family,” she said, thanking people for their kindness, ignoring the unpleasant rumors and gossip, and saying that her heart goes out to everyone affected by cancer.

Good for her. I wish her a speedy and full recovery.
