Is it proper to call someone “Francis I” when we do not have a “Francis II” and no idea that we ever will? The Society of Jesus is no longer what it was two days ago, nor is Argentina. I suspect “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina” suddenly becomes, for Pope Francis, “Cry and Pray for Me, Argentina.” John Paul II’s first papal words still echo – “Do not be afraid.” Pope Francis need not be afraid either. That is what it means to be a pope and a Catholic in the modern world.
