Porn Again

Kathryn — a discussion of porn in society is good thing. Except in my lifetime society has discussed it endlessly, mostly at the behest of the feminists — with whom I agree on this, and it has only gotten much much worse. Hard to see what can be done about the internet.   My point was that the military is not the place to have this discussion.  Better the Congressman begin with strip clubs and other unpleasant stuff near home. Also, whatever I happen to think of Playboy, there is a significant distinction between it and hardcore porn, just as there is between allowing a soldier to have a few beers, or drinks, and encouraging drunkenness.  One is a release, the other is a problem.

In the military it has traditionally been the different culture of the officer class that integrated the higher minded notions of honor and gentlemanliness into the mission at hand.  The civilizing role of women, and marriage, which is integral to a good society, gets done at home, in civilian life. And if it is done well by mothers, then the bad behavior of sons is capped. (Not that I want to blame mothers…) This is all broad theory, of course. Reality is messier.
