Portation of Illegal Immigrants

A **lot** of emails along these lines (this particular one, I note, from

TEXAS): “Mr. Derbyshire, on the ‘can’t do it’ sentiments of some of our

fellow citizens, let me say this. If we were really to make an effort to

deport illegals, I’d volunteer to drive one of the buses. I’m sure there are

plenty more who feel the same way. My wife is a legal immigrant here and she

is even more strident.”

Ah, Sir, it is precisely we legal immigrants who are the most strident. As

a friend of mine, another Brit import, likes to say: “We immigrants are

here to do the dirty jobs Americans won’t do. Like, calling for the

enforcement of federal laws…”

John Derbyshire — Mr. Derbyshire is a former contributing editor of National Review.
