Pre-teen Sex and the Senator

Last night, during the “Compassion Forum,” Barack Obama, talking about his daughters, said: “if, at the age of 12 or 13, they made what I would consider to be a mistake, in having sex or unprotected sex, and ended up getting pregnant.”

Is there ever an instance where a 12- or 13-year-old girl having sex isn’t a mistake? If you learned your 12- or 13-year-old girl had sex, would your first question be, “Did you use a condom?” Thereby making it all okay?

My question is: Why on earth can’t we talk about convincing our 12 and 13-year-olds that they can be doing things other than having sex? Period.
