The Price of Modernism

I. M. Pei is widely hailed as a master of modernist architecture, and the angular East Building of the National Gallery of Art — situated on the Mall in D.C. — is regarded as one of his triumphs. It was built with private dollars. Now, a design flaw is going to cost taxpayers $85 million.
