A Pro-Life Vote

The Senate just voted 52-42 to pass the Vitter amendment to the Indian Health bill. The amendment explicitly preserves the Hyde amendment protection for taxpayers against paying for abortions (with exceptions).

Eight Democrats voted for it: Mary Landrieu (La.), Evan Bayh (Ind.), Harry Reid (Nev.), Bob Casey (Pa.), Ken Salazar (Colo.), Robert Byrd (W. Va.), Tim Johnson (S.D.) and Ben Nelson (Neb.).

Update: An alert reader points out (and THOMAS confirms) that Sen. McCain cosponsored this amendment — although he and Sen. John Cornyn (Tex.) were not there to vote for it.

Note that Senator McCain cosponsored the amendment, along with Sens. Thune, Inhofe, and Brownback. McCain is pro-life, but doesn’t usually make bills/amendments such as these ones in which he goes out of his way to be a cosponsor. This is evidence that he and his staff are trying to make amends with the conservative base on all fronts, including in Senate legislation that is probably not noticed by the general public.
