Promoting Talent

I attended a small fundraiser in my neighborhood last night for Senator Jim Talent of Missouri. He was thoughtful, extremely well-informed, and altogether A-plus on the war against radical Islam. But more importantly for this audience, the guy is a huge National Review fan. He told me how he began reading the magazine as a teenager and came to view Mr. Buckley as a personal idol, both for his politics and for his style of writing. He has a cherished memory of giving a speech with Mr. Buckley in attendance, and then receiving a personal note from him afterward. The Senator even showed me his National Review issue credit card, and then quoted James Burnham in his remarks to the assembled. A lovely night for all.
