With Proper Punctuation, Taking On Big Labor

When a carpenters’ union took offense to a Subaru dealership in Wichita, Kan., hiring a local, nonunion firm for a bit of drywall work, the union set up a big banner with bold red letters outside the dealership reading “SHAME ON SUBARU OF WICHITA.”

So the Subaru dealership set up a similarly designed sign just to the right of the union banner that read “FOR HAVING UNBEATABLE PRICES.”

The union moved their sign further to the right so the Subaru dealership would have no room to place their sign after the union’s.

So the dealers cleverly and promptly added a comma to their sign and placed it to the left of the union’s banner to get the same point across:

Aaron Wirtz, in charge of marketing and media for the local Subaru, told the Wichita Eagle that they have good relations with the people holding the union sign. “We’ve actually given them lunch. We’ve invited them to visit our facilities,” he said.

Wirtz said that the people holding the sign didn’t really seem like union workers or even sympathetic activists, but had been paid to stand there. “It doesn’t really look like they want to be here anymore than we want them to be here, to be quite frank,” Wirtz said.
