Protesting a University’s Egregious Abuse of a Law Professor

I have read about numerous instances where intolerant academic administrators throw their weight around to bully scholars they dislike, but what is happening to one professor in Ohio takes the cake.

The actions taken against law professor Scott Gerber by his employer, Ohio Northern University, began with campus security suddenly coming into his classroom, accompanied by armed town police, and taking him away to the law dean’s office. There he was told that he is “barred from teaching, banished from campus,” and under threat of dismissal. “The grounds: ‘Collegiality.’ The specifics: None.” Gerber wrote about this Kafkaesque situation in the Wall Street Journal.

Peter Wood, the president of the National Association of Scholars, of which Gerber is a member, has written an open letter to the president of the college, Melissa J. Baumann, to protest the egregious treatment of Professor Gerber by the dean of the law school, Charles Rose, and calling on Baumann to issue a public apology.

Please read this important letter here.
