Yeah, yeah, I know: I forgot the Russo-Japanese War of 1904. My response to these quibbles is the one time-honored by writers since ‘Omer smote ‘is bloomin’ lyre: It’s the editors’ fault. In any case, a nation as self-consciously Westernizing as Japan was in the late 19th century can fairly be included as “Western.”
