Quin Hillyer Packs a Fine, Final Wallop

My old friend Quin Hillyer does his many fans proud in his latest, and perhaps final, TV ad that will appear before Tuesday’s special-election primary for Alabama’s first congressional district. Hillyer — a veteran political commentator and fellow alumnus and freshman floormate of mine at Georgetown University — is in a tight race for the seat vacated when former incumbent Jo Bonner resigned to join the University of Alabama.

If Hillyer can score at least the second spot on Tuesday, he will enter a run-off that many expect he can win.

Hillyer’s campaign should be buoyed by a fine commercial in which The Weekly Standard’s Fred Barnes praises Hillyer, recaps his dozens of endorsements from long-time conservative and free-market advocates (including yours truly), and reminds viewers that Hillyer predicted Obama’s aggressive, brutish overreach, including using the IRS as his own band of political henchmen.

The TV spot ends with Hillyer warmly shaking the hand of none other than President Ronald Wilson Reagan at the 1985 Conservative Political Action Conference, an event we both attended as energetic leaders of Young Americans for Freedom.

Republican-primary voters in greater Mobile soon will decide whom they would like to represent them in Congress. This solid and encouraging advertisement makes a strong argument that Quin Hillyer — who has been in the conservative vineyards since junior high school — is just the man they ought to send to Washington.
