Racial Quotas Come to Starkville, Miss.

The board of aldermen there appointed Susan Tomlinson, who is white, to fill one of the five seats on the local school district’s board of trustees. The appointment lasted a day as Mayor Parker Wiseman, an up-and-coming Democrat who is also white, vetoed the appointment last week based on the race of the candidate. His veto letter made no bones about it: With this appointment, he said, the board would be 80 percent white in a school district that is only 32 percent white, and that’s just not acceptable, diversity-wise, regardless of Ms. Tomlinson’s qualifications.
