First-term congressman Trey Radel (R., Fla.) will resign from Congress on Monday after pleading guilty to cocaine possession last year. Earlier this month, Radel returned to Congress after going to rehab following an October arrest for buying the substance from an undercover agent.
Radel had initially taken a leave of absence while he sought treatment in November, amid encouragement from several Republicans for him to step down. He indicated that he would not resign after apologizing to his constituents as well as his fellow House members.
The Republican-heavy 19th congressional district in Florida was previously held by former congressmsan Connie Mack, who is reportedly eyeing the seat.
