Dominic has a thought-provoking suggestion in his latest post. I won’t spoil his whole argument, which you should read in its entirety, but the basic gist is that baseball might get more interesting for viewers if teams were encouraged to move their stadium fences back and/or shape their stadiums a bit more irregularly to diminish the over-reliance on home runs.
I have just one small quibble: If this leads to more stadiums having anything that resembles the horror of the Green Monster, I’m out. I’m sure I’m an outlier on this point, I’m biased (as a Yankees fan), and I agree in general that home runs have become far too frequent. But there’s something especially galling about watching an amazing hit destined for home-run glory smash into the very top of Boston’s monstrosity and bounce back for a measly double.
