…And lest anyone suspect that I seek to downplay Abu Ghraib; I don’t.  I don’t defend it and, as I’ve said and as I’ve briefed before (including to The New Republic’s editorial board, Jason), I believe that those who perpetrated it should be held accountable.  Indeed, what was described as Seymour Hersh’s scoop was, in fact, the leak of an already-ongoing Pentagon investigation.  The point is that many in in Europe, the Arab League and, yes, the press, have lost their moral compass and sense of perspective.  And, until the Europeans and Arab League especially start treating Arab on Arab violence with the same alacrity as they treat other abuses of human rights, it will be hard to take their human rights advocacy as seriously.
