As someone who was born in Honduras and whose entire family (on my mother’s side) still lives there, I have to laugh at those Huffington Post commenters who seem to know everything about “Honduran death squads”. Those left-wing wackos have never been to Honduras, like I have. I was there as recently as last year. People in Central America would still take Ronald Reagan over the Sandinistas any day. There has been an unprecedented string of peaceful transfers of presidential power since the 1980s in Central America. Remember when Democrats said democracy would never work down there? Honduras just went through a close-call election in November that was resolved peacefully and with relatively little acrimony while USA came across as the banana republic after the 2000 election debacle. One final point for the far-left liberals who are attacking Beinart. They should remember that countries like Honduras and El Salvador sent troops to Iraq. Why would countries who were victimized by America’s “death squads” help America “export Democracy by force” to Iraq? Thanks, Someone who knows how grateful Hondurans are to the United States
