Re: Cafta and Robin Hayes

Ramesh is right to downplay — though not to reduce to zero — the chances of Rep. Robin Hayes losing a reelection challenge in North Carolina’s 8th Congressional District because of his vote for CAFTA. Most of the textile firms in his district were for the agreement, believing that it might help marginally their efforts to compete with Chinese textile and apparel manufacturers by strengthening ties with Central American business partners. More importantly, the likely Democratic nominee against Robin at this point is Rick Glazier, a rather liberal state representative and trial lawyer from Fayetteville who is a nice, bright man but whose positions on a variety of matters — taxes, illegal immigration, social issues — are a poor fit for this district.

John Hood — Hood is president of the John William Pope Foundation, a North Carolina grantmaker. His latest book is a novel, Forest Folk (Defiance Press, 2022).
