I pretty much agree with every word of JPod’s assessment of Children of Men. But in the winter issue of The New Atlantis, James Bowman reviewed both the novel and the film, and was rather less impressed with both. Worth a read.
Speaking of the New Atlantis, two articles from the current (spring) issue are now online—Adam Keiper on the new crop of critics of nanotechnology, and NR’s own John Derbyshire reviewing Neal Stephenson’s Baroque Cycle. I recall Jonah recently noted how much he likes long book reviews—Jonah, you’ll love Derb’s review: it gives new meaning to the term “long review”. (We can’t complain, though, we assigned Derb to review more than 3,000 pages worth of books, after all).
The rest of the spring issue, with articles on China’s space ambitions, surveillance technology on 24 and The Wire, Brave New World at 75 and much more, will be online soon. Of course if you subscribed, you’d already have them.
