Re Community Organizing

Kathryn, I have a piece in the upcoming NR on race in the ’08 campaign — “A Ticklish Position: Republicans run against the first black presidential nominee.” And ticklish is the word.

You are quite right: Palin’s words about community organizing have been denounced as racist. (Same as the sun has risen in the east.) But here’s one thing that people forget: Her jibes were responsive, or retaliatory, if you like. They (the Democrats and the Left) had put down her experience as a small-town mayor. She was comparing her own qualifications with those of the Democratic presidential nominee.

It’s not like she woke up and decided to mock Obama’s background as a community organizer. It’s not like it was unprovoked. It’s not like it came out of the blue.

Anyway . . .
