Stan – I think you’re probably right re: TNR and Hillary. As she has moved rightish they’ve moved decidedly leftish. There is no way they’d be against HillaryCare today. In fact, I think they all but admitted that editorially not too long ago. Re: My view of Hillary, I’d have to go back to see what I said. But if memory serves, I was saying that Beinart was right that Hillary’s ideological convictions have been held more consistently than some of the flip-flopper criticisms would suggest. I think she is very much a liberal but she is very calculating about how she is perceived. Where I agreed with Peter was on the source of her liberalism. She is a religious moralist, of the leftish variety. But that makes her something of a throwback to an age when religious left seemed like less of an oxymoron, and hence makes it difficult for many on the right and left to get a clear fix on what she’s about.
