Andrew Doran’s item yesterday on the violence in Egypt, along with other NRO pieces since, crossed paths with a couple of related items from the New York Times. One was this morning’s editorial urging that we “choose not to help the military.” The paper’s worried that doing so “could fuel a generation of Islamists to choose militancy over the ballot box.” The sanctifying power of an election notwithstanding, some might argue that Islamists have already made that choice. The other Times item was yesterday’s offer to sell readers the front page of the August 19, 1934, issue of the paper. It headlined a report that a “plebiscite in Germany approved the vesting of sole executive power in Adolf Hitler as Fuhrer.” Hitler won with 90 percent of the vote, but nobody did anything about it, no doubt out of fear that could fuel a generation of Germans to choose militancy over the ballot box.
