Stanley, I think that Democrats would probably appoint six people as committed to their worldview as (one hopes) Republicans would. In that case, deadlock would seem likely. The only thing to prevent it is ham-handed automatic cuts that will be anathema to both sides for different reasons. Maybe for that reason Democrats would also want to blow up the automatic cuts if the committee deadlocks.
