John, you haven’t read my conclusion: “If it helps us capture or kill al Qaeda, though, that knowledge is a beautiful thing.” Perhaps I was not as clear as I could have been, but the point is that the oft-repeated notion that we will peacefully win over Islamic fascism by better understanding the root cause of their dislike of us is a joke. So if I’m impugning anything, it’s the implicit notion that we can achieve peace through learning. Our battle here is not for hearts and minds, it is for security. But I know that you know that. It seems to me that Doubleday’s hyping of the not-yet-completed book as a benign “al Qaeda Reader,” however, leaves much to be desired.
