Re: ’embarassed by its Catholicism’

It’s a core point in conversations and debates and the life of Catholic institutions. If you’re “Catholic,” there’s supposed to be something different about your institution and the people in it (the same goes for an evangelical, or Mormon or Jewish, etc. institution). They presumably believe something, live something — this “Catholic” thing, that Blessed Sacrament in the chapel, means something — sinners though we all are.

The Washington Post can and should move on but Catholics and others who care about the future of these institutions can not afford to. Some of these schools may simply not be Catholic when all is said and done. But a school like Notre Dame cannot go down — and I don’t think it will — without a loving fight. The Vagina Monologues and Obama’s honorary degree make headlines, but there is a lot of good going on there besides football and that all should be protected and salvaged. Good leadership there could do that.

But we’ll see the Washington Post at the commencement, that’s for sure.
