A reader: “I heard it referred to in the manner you describe by a friend of

mine who was a Captain in the U.S Army at the time, during the 70’s, and by

another friend who was an Airman in the 80’s. So I’m guessing it’s in common

use in all U.S. military branches, or at least used to be.

“Perhaps the femininization of the U.S. military has led to the term’s

demise in recent years?”
