Jonah — terrific piece today. Pandering to the young is a pet peeve of mine, too, as is the idea that there is anything inherently virtuous about being young. But I’d differ from you on one point: There are such things as “great” generations, they’re just neither born nor uniform. If that isn’t true, and all generations steadily produce a mixed bag of good and bad, then I presume we wouldn’t worry so much about the prospect of raising a country full of dull and dependent Julias, and nor would conservatives consider it a threat to our future that children are so often inured from failure. If external forces — government, culture, parenting — can ruin a people, then surely they can also make them great?
