Many thanks for that, Jerry. As usual with Randal’s research, I see very little to disagree with there. The spin that High-Speed Rail has been successful all over the world was repeated again this morning, and it is so important to point out that this is not the case. Given that the pot of money the Feds have for HSR is $8 billion initial plus $1 billion a year, and just one “ready to go” project costs at least $33 billion, I still suspect that this so-called plan will never get anywhere. When Secretary LaHood says without a hint of irony “some of these plans are twenty years old” that should be a clue as to the likelihood of this plan’s success.
