The water at Harvard must also prompt false memories. How about this, from Ted Kennedy in 1996: “I remember ‘Help Wanted’ signs in stores when I was growing up saying ‘No Irish Need Apply.”’ The problem is that there were no such signs, even in the 19th century — “No Irish Need Apply” was actually the title of an English music hall song that caught on here among the Irish as a way of promoting ethnic solidarity. I don’t think Kennedy was lying (not in this particular instance, anyway) — he really believes something that never happened.
