I think they were only ill-timed if you were one of his advisers, saying, stay away from the topic, Casey will twist and use against you. As it happened, Santorum made it easier for Casey to use the topic against him the way he said it the first time. But it’s a sound point Santorum made (as was clear once he elaborated) and saving people’s lives is something people are trying to do right now — getting people out who are still refusing — so it’s a topic worth discussing. To discuss even more later as future hurricane plans are developed, but as we’re watching it is not an irrelevant time to raise it. If I were a political consultant though, I’d suspect I’d say, Senator, why don’t you leave that to someone who has less of a fight on their hands this election cycle?
