His “jokes” about Katrina being Bush’s Monica reinforce a belief I’ve long held but never articulated: To be a good comedian, it helps to be both smart and ignorant.
You have to be smart to recognize the ironies and make the insightful comparisons. But it’s also useful to be ignorant – to know nothing about federal/state responsibilities, regulations and relationships, to have read as little as possible about what may actually have happened (e.g. the mayor failing to deploy the school buses to help the poor get out of town, state officials barring the Red Cross because they wanted the Superdome evacuated).
