Andrew: I’m not suggesting that anyone be kidnapped. Rather, since all adult male citizens between 17 and 45 have always been members of the militia since colonial times, and are still under federal law (see here), all I’m suggesting is that the militia be called up on a regular basis. In fact, beyond the benefit of cultivating patriotic solidarity, universal male militia service sends the important message that defending your country isn’t just another service that you pay someone else to do for you, like the plumber who unclogs your drain. Instead, it’s something that each of us is individually responsible for, and those in the active duty military aren’t hirelings, but merely those among us who’ve decided to devote themselves full-time to the task.
