In response to the new Rasmussen poll showing 53 percent of Americans in favor of keeping an abortion ban in any Obamacare bill, Rep. Bart Stupak (D., Mich.) tells National Review Online that the poll’s numbers “support what we have been saying from the beginning — our amendment maintains current law and is in line with public opinion.” Now, says Stupak, is the time for his colleagues in Congress to “listen to the American public” and “not the time to rewrite policy on the federal funding of abortion.” Even with a majority of Americans in his corner, Stupak has quite the hill to climb in coming weeks. While he fights to keep his pro-life amendment in the House’s health-care bill, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) is doing everything she can to avoid making a deal: She’s talking up the Senate’s bill, which was gutted (thanks Ben Nelson!) of Stupak’s amendment language, and pushing for a legislative a “ping pong.” The latter would let her avoid an official conference — the kind of conference, of course, that would enable Stupak, and other pro-life Democrats, to voice their dissent.
