A contrary opinion: “Mr. Derbyshire—The Saxon Math series is truly horrible. My daughters’ new school (it’s an Opus Dei girls school) adopted this series. I spoke with the principal and it seems that Saxon is the best of a bad lot.

“If you are really a mathematician you will hate it. Everything is broken up — for example bits of geometry appear randomly throughout rather than being treated as a whole. Everything else is done similarly.”

[Derb here] Well, I said I hadn’t looked into them, so they don’t come with the Derb Seal of Approval. Homeschoolers seem to like them, though — usually a good indicator.
