Re: Moussaoui Mush

An e-mail:

I don’t know.  Sending the message to the terrorists that we don’t fear you, we pity you may cut the deepest.  This is, after all, their greatest fear, that ultimately they are powerless.  By pitying them we are confirming their worst fears.  To deny Moussaoui his martyrdom on the basis of pity has to sting worse than anything else we could have done with him.  He will address the court this morning.  Then he will be largely forgotten and unheard until the day that he dies and is mentioned only in the briefest terms on the back pages of Daily Newspapers.  (This would not have been the case had he been sentenced to death when every appeal would have given him a podium, where every news station would have camped out on death watch.)
