Let me for a moment take an aerial view and ignore the merits of the conservative critics’ case. I’m reasonably pleased with the pledge — it beat my expectations — but it’s a good thing that there are conservatives out there complaining about it. The day all conservatives pronounce themselves fully satisfied with the Republican agenda is the day the movement dies. (Of course, a movement that only carped would become irrelevant. Here’s to diversity!)
