“Derb—The banner with the star on it is used to represent a child in the

service, not necessarily killed. My dad has one and his son (my brother) is

fortunately still among the living.”

“Dear Mr. Derbyshire—The banner appears to have a blue star, which

indicates a relative serving in the military. Gold stars indicate the

serviceman died in action. Perhaps she was presented with the flag at her

loved one’s funeral after he had lived a long & happy life.”
