Re ‘A Proper Candidate for Asylum?’

Derb, cherished Derb: In Valles Garcia’s town, the police chief was murdered — by beheading. Were the Mexican gangs paying homage to the Islamists, or is beheading a homegrown form of murder? I’m not sure. Understandably, no one in the town was willing to replace him as police chief: except for a criminology student, a girl. The week she assumed the job, a local politician and his son were killed. Other people who have tried to maintain civilization have bitten the dust, too.

From accounts I’ve read, Marisol did all she could to help the people in her town. Then she ran. I have a feeling that she ran while she still had her life — that she had reached her limit. Naturally, she took her son with her: being his mother, and not wanting to leave him at the mercy of the beheaders.

I hope she will be able to take part — to resume a part — in Mexican life one day. She does not seem exactly the unpatriotic type. But I would not want to send her back to the beheaders. And she strikes me as the kind of person who would be an asset to American society (like John Derbyshire and other immigrant greats).

I must confess, I don’t know what the law says on this. But if the law says we must send Marisol back, then I regard the law as an ass. (I know, the original is “the law is a ass.”)

If I don’t respond to a response in a timely fashion, it is because — life can be weird this way — I have to be away from a computer.

P.S. I’m so off the conservative reservation, I even want to help Libyans! (But hang on, that’s Obama’s policy too — not helping them — so it all gets a little confusing.)

P.P.S. I know these matters are complicated. Sorry to be breezy-flip. I plead “blogging.” Will properly write later . . .

Rosenstein Defends the Mueller Probe

Well, did you think Rod Rosenstein was going to say, “You got me. The Mueller probe was inappropriate and politicized?” No, you didn’t. And the deputy attorney general did not disappoint. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday, Rosenstein defended the investigation as “appropriate ... Read More

The Blackface Party

I must have missed something: Was there some kind of all-hands white-people meeting at which we voted to kick the Democrats out? Elizabeth Warren, Rachel Dolezal, Beto O’Rourke — what’s up with all the ethnic play-acting? Isn’t cultural appropriation supposed to be a bad thing among progressives? Isn’t ... Read More

A Right-Wing Halloween

‘The world is not a dark and evil place,” insists an exasperated woman played by Judy Greer in Halloween. “It’s full of love and understanding!” I put the question to the class: Is she right? In the new film (not a reboot but a sequel that occurs 40 years after the events in the 1978 original and ... Read More
