One other thought about John J’s post, though. How GREAT that the Yanks and Tigers played DAY baseball on a glorious October day in New York. That’s how baseball became the national pastime, passed from generation to generation.
Tonight’s Met game will start, if we are lucky, at about 830pm. There will be two minutes of commercials between innings. at 1030 it will be the bottom of the fourth – again, if we’re lucky. The sons (and daughters) to whom the game is supposed to be handed will be asleep when it’s decided … as will most of the fathers who are supposed to do the handing down.
Thus does baseball take television’s money … and commit suicide.
